Doesn't this basically come down to northern people being terribly ashamed of how northern another northern person sounded?

I'm sure there is an element of cultural cringe going on (I didn't see the interview and have nothing against this lad or his pastimes btw), and this heightens the perception of a lack of eloquent, intelligent rugby league players who are comfortable in front of the media. Having a regional accent needn't be an issue, it can add character, but more important is confidence and an ability to express oneself well. I think Jon Wilkin is quite a good example of a player who comes across as confident and eloquent in front of the media.

I wonder if the ruggers lot cringe when a toff comes on sounding like he has a plum in his mouth and a silver spoon falling out of his backside?

No idea, and I don't really care. What I do know is that RU, like football can lay came to a deeper national base, which means accents aren't concentrated around 3 historic English counties.

I turned it in at that point, I thought I was watching a low budget remake of Kes for a minute.

No, there's absolutely nothing wrong with Northern traits at all!

For me, what this comes down to is that there's more to the heartlands of the rugby league than the stereotypical image that the Southern based Media have been all too happy to perpetuate.

We are a sport that have moved on more than just about any other and there are many aspects of RL that would make Other sports seem prehistoric by comparison.

Many so called journalists have done their utmost to maintain the image of RL as a small sport played in old pit villages by a handfull of yokel like creatures from the 18th century.

They don't need any help from our so called media partners who should be helping the sport to become more cosmopolitan or at least give that impression.

It was at best a naive feature and at worst purposely destructive.
