Lets not forget why the fences were there in the first place.

Hooliganism was not a factor on that day but the previous 20 years or so and the way football supporters were looked at by the rest of society (and in particular by the police) was the ultimate cause of the tragedy.

I'm not disagreeing with that. My point is that despite seeing what can happen at games with cages, these countries have done nothing to rectify it.

No ultimate cause was the police opening the gate to let fans into the already full central pens instead of directing them to the side ones with space in.

I couldn't make it today to be honest I don't know if I could of made it through all of it, only saw the end part on tv and that was enough to set me off.

People weren't penned into a small space at that Lille game. There was loads of room to the left of the United end - everyone just entered the stand and stood in the middle. With no stewarding to move people around to the empty sections of the stand, everyone just kept piling into the middle and down to the front.

The fences themselves weren't the problem. Inadequate emergency exits in those fences and poor policing and stewarding were the problems.

I also wish people would stop mentioning ticketless supporters. The number of ticketless fans who had turned up was minimal and not a contributing factor. It's easy to believe the myth, though.

Indeed and if it had happened in Spain or France and not Sheffield we would not have done anything either.
