I dont think they're fans at all, probably used to go when we were good but now just go the odd away game to get tanked up and shout abuse.
A true fan wouldnt shout abuse at the players or coach and would support their team whatever the result. Ok we we are all disapointed at times with results and performances but we're there for following week with an open mind of what to expect, These idiots just go to cause trouble and make genuine Widnes fans look bad. Think their minds are already made up before they even leave the comfort of their own homes that they are going to kick off.

Fairly good analysis that mate. Although I think it was probably only a handful at most. Widnes fans travelled well and were very vocal at times the other night. I had to laugh at a couple of lads who were going beserk after thinking the dissalowed try had stood, only then to look daft when they realised Fax were on the attack
an atmosphere that isn't created by people in matching shirts clapping along to a drum or novelty PA music might be nice!
I have never wrote on here before but felt the need to after i was at the game on friday and witnessed this 'abuse'
This so called fan was shouting abuse at the players and there was no need for it.
thacks had come over to see his gf along with a few other players and some moron did single him out telling him to 'F*** Off' and fair play to thacks for shouting back at him, i would have done if that was me.
there was 4 points in the game and halifax were a strong team but there were players that played far worse, i thought thacks was one of our best players tonight along with webbo.
if your gonna abuse the players stay at home cos your not true fans !

I certainly don't think that Thacks deserved the slating that he took if that was what happened.. (not saying it didn't but I had left at the final hooter) but I wouldn't agree that he had a good game.
I like the guy and am delighted when a play comes off for him but his thought process seems far too slow.
He has terrific pace and can move the ball well if he has already decided to do this before the pass arrives at him but far too often indecision gets the better of him and the play slows down.
There is an element within the Widnes fans that are quick to jump on the backs of the players. I would be lying if I said at times I don't get frustrated too if it looks like they aren't trying.
I think there is a fine balance between showing disapproval and crossing the line. Personally I think booing is fine if directed at the teams effort and if deserved, (I personally haven't boo'd a team since the Aberavon debacle).. singling out of players because of ability is unwarranted.. lack of effort not so but how can you really tell sometimes??

I completely agree about Doran... he hasn't hit his potential of 2007 yet and was responsible for a couple of silly penalties (which the Leigh fans have remarked on) and the pathetic attempt at the tackle that let in the first try. I think there are a few players that need jump starting this year.
I think we also need to look at the hooker position and consider an alternative for Smithy.
Varkulis is another one who just doesn't seem to be offering too much at the moment.
I don't doubt the quality of any of our players and if I was Cullen I would be bringing each player in and asking them what they think their strengths are and setting some goals for the next match. I would be doing this on a weekly basis and the morning after should generate some soul-searching of those that aren't performing.
Gannon is one player who has previously frustrated me but his effort recently has been very good. Interesting to see how much say he had before and during the game on Friday night.

Just to add about Thackray.. I do want him to do well and wouldn't fault his effort.. but he needs some help at the moment. I think he has a lot more about him than some of our other players that we've tried in that role and think he will do well.

Going against my principles here once again but, I have to say the thread on TIW regarding 'fans having a history' of jumping on the 'abuse the team' bandwagon is near enough spot on. Wasn't around to witness past glories as i am only 20, but as far back as I can remember Widnes fans have always got on the players' backs. Something i feel really strongly about.
OK if there has been a on field fraud going on, ie most of 2005 season with the usual suspects such as Emelio, Craigie Wozniak and the rest of the funny farm then i do agree, fans have a right to voise their concerns and constructively critiscise the players. The odd boo etc, however there are boundaries that shouldn't be crossed which is in the best interest for all parties, ie club, sqaud and fans alike.
But I get the impression a lot of our supporters, most notably older fans feel we should be winning week in week out and have a god given right to be doing well. This is simpy not the case, the squad PC has in front of him has been inherited and there will no doubt be an exodus in the ensuing months, but in the mean time as fans of the great club/town I believe firmly it is our duty to back the club and EVERYONE associated with it. Some people expect far too much. OK fax are probably the pick of the bunch at present, but who knows we could be singing 'the times are a changing' come May or June, or even come GF time in September.
But what was eveident at Fax was; certain sections of the crowd trying to jee everyone up and sing and shout and get behind the team and will them on to win, and the over-riding majority just passive and dull.We need to lift our lads where ever we happen to be playing. If you want to boo and get on their backs at every opportunity then sit yourself down and question why you 'support' this club?
