Simply put, if it's on Sky you limit the opportunity of the game being exposed (even if badly) to a much larger audience.
Let's compare the viewing figures from this weekends double header with the grand final. Bet you the BBC get the bigger audience.
I know the commentary team leave a lot to be desired, but this can be rectified by the RFL themselves getting involved.
Sky would just use the CC to leverage extra subscribers and let's face it, if you are a RL fan, you probably already have it.
Mind you, if the BBC lose out here, I believe it will be the begining of the end for the licence fee
