I did hear a story of an overseas player a few years ago, he wanted to go back to the NRL so he asked his club to release him with a year to go on his contract. The club agreed. Next thing they get a demand from his agent asking for a "compensation settlement" of most of his final years contract!

I take it we didn't take them up on this, hence the reason he went back to Leeds? I cannot remember.
From what I remember the fee had been agreed verbally between Plange and Gary Hetherington, but had not been written into the contract. Mathers then got offered a one year contract extension at Leeds which he signed, Plange was no longer our coach anyway, and the whole thing died a death, probably because Mathers didn't want to join us at that time!

I don't want to name names, but that sounds Kidwellesque.
Didn't William Webb Ellis pick up the ball and run, someone should really tell Rugby Union.
unlikely to go smith picks him every time for GB never see mathers or goulding on it can't see why he would broker such a deal think he would sooner cash in imo

They are.
You can talk about "on paper" and a host of other things but ultimately Wigan have achieved more in their most baron spell that Wire have. They have at least won some stuff, they have appeared in finals that they havent won, they have consistently finished higher in the league and been in more play offs.
