I've driven several vehicles with a higher side than an arctic lots of times down Hedon Road. I've never tipped one over on a roundabout.

Go and stand down there for a couple of hours, and see how fast some of the wagons go down there.

Also, the ripped-up surfaces on the roundabouts just happen to be the exact places where lorries came to rest after tipping over.

Lorries only tip over because of 3 factors. Extremely high winds (only on exposed routes, so this can be discredited), high speeds or poorly secured or distributed loads. Also add to the fact that 4 of the tip-overs were from lorries belonging to one local haulage company.

You've stolen my washing
From out my back garden
You've tarmacked my driveway
Even though I said no
You've nicked my lead flashing
And weighed it in at the scrappy
Oh St Helen's tatters
Come rob me again

How high is an artic?

Last time I looked there were no height restrictions on any load

The surfacing is shot on hedon road, they have had trouble with is since the day it was put down. and not just in the areas where "vehicles came to rest"

Poor design (of the highway) can also contribute to vehicles tipping over.

OK so most seem to agree the roads are bad. The wider point I was trying to make was about the budgets that seem to me to be misplaced.

Drive from Hull to With or Hornsea for example and you will see a lot of plastic chevrons that have recently been placed on just about every corner no matter how dangerous it appears to be. These blow over in the slightest gale and need constant cost of replacement and maintenance. Seems its standard to place chevrons whether needed or not. There is paint everywhere on the roads - not just on the corners. To me its getting past a joke. Whoever is responsible seems to think we cant negotiate around a bend or read road signs without these guides to help us. Speed humps springing up everywhere. Speed humps that also need to be maintained and at a rate more frequent than a flat road.

We seem to have lost the plot where road safety is concerned. Spend the monies allocated for these needless (imo) projects and spend the money on keeping the roads in our county safe for road users.

Wondered if anyone else has come the conclusion that the road surfaces throughout Hull are a disgrace. It seems there are potholes literally everywhere. The Avenues areas and around the hospital are particularly poor. The main Hedon road roundabouts between the prison and salt end are also very poor. There must be other areas not frequented by me that are just as bad.

As a motorcyclist I used to only notice these holes when on my bike but there are some real bone shakers even in my car. The cost of repair would be in the many thousands of pounds. I know its just after the winter and that potholes have a habit of breaking open due to frost etc but even given all of that I cannot remember a time they were quite so in need of repair and on such a scale.

I have claimed in sin bin topics that perfectly good tarmac should be put into potholes rather than used to make speed humps, some of which are now beginning to be a danger in themselves as some have big holes in them. I have had two springs gone in my car in recent weeks due to these holes and humps.

Should the council put more effort into making our roads safe and on a wider topic, wouldnt the money invested in the "Camera safety Partnership" (from wherever that budget comes from), and the road safety (speed humps, plastic chevrons everywhere you look etc) be better spent on making the roads sfaer for us all rather than trying to target the few who creep over the speed limits?

They dont fund it. I agree that the roads are shocking around Hull though. Anlaby road near the Hospital is terrible.

you'll find the chevrons tend to go missing when someone drives into them, hence its preferable they are;

1) Collapsible rather than solid steel posts set in concrete
2) There to warn people of the corner.

its also ludicrous to say they are on "just about every corner".

Speed humps only need to be maintained because people drive over them to fast and take lumps out of them with their exhausts or barry boy front skirts.

To be fair i have not noticed anything wrong with the roads, it may be down to driving in Bulgaria the last few years where a pothole is a few feet at least :D

The roads in Hull are awful, all the roundabouts are a disgrace (particularly all the ones down Hedon road!)
I have noticed that they are resurfacing a few places though - but they wont do the majority.

End of the financial year! All of the pavements near my house have just been re-done, even though most didnt need it.

Try doing what I've managed for the last 40 years: drive to the conditions, keep your eyes on the road and you shouldn't have too many problems.

There you have, you might be still paying your council tax, but because of the global financial crisis its ok for these things not to get done.
