BRAMLEY TAKE ON HUNSLET IN PRE-SEASON CLASH
Bramley Buffaloes get their 2009 National League season preparations underway in earnest with a mouthwatering friendly clash against old rivals Hunslet Hawks at Stanningley’s Arthur Miller Stadium next Thursday 26th March at 8pm.
The match, which is just £2 entry, revives memories of a rivalry that dates back to 1896 with older Bramley fans able to recall many fierce contests including the season, some 30 years ago, when both clubs won promotion to the First Division at the same time.
Bramley Buffaloes’ new coach Mark Butterill commented: “We have been training hard since January and the lads are champing at the bit to get some real game time.
“With Hawks signing John Richardson and Tony Williams from last year’s Bramley squad I know that our lads will be keen to impress.
“We do not know the make up of the Hunslet side yet,” added Butterill “ but they have a big squad and those selected will be seeking to clinch a first team place there.”
Buffaloes all-action hero front rower Danny O’Connor will also be keen to put one over on the team he grew up with before joining the Buffaloes.
Buffaloes Chair Martyn Cheney is looking for a good turn out from rugby league fans across the city: “It promises to be a cracker” said Cheney, “and admission is a snip at just £2 (£1 for concessions).”
Hunslet Chief Executive Alan Stephenson, known as Big Al to Hunslet fans, is also delighted the game is taking place and urged Hunslet fans to head out to West Leeds on Thursday evening: “I look forward to the day when we are back playing Bramley in regular league competition and I am impressed how the club has fought back to re-establish itself in the Rugby League family. I hope our fans turn out to renew the friendly banter of days gone by!”
Bramley’s Co-operative National league season gets underway on April 11th at Warrington with Nottingham Outlaws the visitors to Stanningley in their first ‘free entry’ home game on Sunday 19th April.
