I would stand with my Dad near the half way line and always behind us was a man everyone refered to as 'THE GOB'. He was tall and thin with long scruffy hair and i think he had a beard. He always wore a blue denim jacket with a faded Hull shirt underneath. This fella had a really deep gruff voice and always had the fans around him laughing out loud. He said the funniest things and his insults towards the opposition made me laugh even though I didn't always know what he meant. Whenever I think about the old Threepenny stand The Gob and the burning of Rovers scalves always come to mind.

long scruffy hair, beard, denim jacket & faded hull shirt you say, sounds like every self respecting male in the early 80s mind cant of been my old man he was with it n had a tash!!!

As for Barends he usually had a tropical fruit hamper waiting for him in Threepenny's

I know and agree that we are not suppoosed to find that funny, but looking back, whether the PC brigade like ot or not, it happened and you have to laugh don't you,

Incidentally when I was 11 or 12 we used to lay on the roof of the trainers huts to watch the game till Roy Francis came out and gave us a rollicking for making a noise!!!

Remember back in the 60's when my dad used to take me in 3d's and all the empty beer bottles lined on the ledge up at back of 3d's. Happy days.

That would be awesome! The last bit where the crowd all tried (and failed dismally) to hit the high note was class!

Remember playing Wigan in the mid 80's some bloke in the threepenny stand was shouting Andy Gregory all game.It was only in the dying seconds of the game he replied what and the bloke in the stand shouts,"Your a Wa##er."Even brought a smile to Gregorys chubby face.

In the hands of a genius.

In the 60's I used to go with my mate and his father. After the game he used to go in the supporters club for a couple of pints so me and my mate used to collect the empties from Threepennies and take them back to the off license for the refund on returned bottles.

The club should make more if threepenny stand now. I've a polo shirt with "Threepenny Stander Forever" on it. A 3d range of clothing my go down well. Certainly a part of the clubs history the club should not allow to die.
