At the beggining of the season Ian Lenagan said in the local paper that this was the the year that Wigan would be seriousley challenging a top 3 position. Wigan then went on to lose there 3 games and said there was no need to panic. The next game Wigan played at harlequins and just managed to win and beat Bradford easily. Ian Lengan came out of is office to basicley say that the team is now playing EXCELLENT rugby league! and then they go and lose by 30 points to Leeds!. What IL hasnt noticed that as a fan for over 20 years the team is KNOWHERE near as good as it used to be. The simple fact is that Leeds and St Helens have signed better players than Wigan and that the salary cap has ruined the clubs chances of being the top team or a top 3 team! people need to realise that even though sam tomkins and young ainscough are good young players they still need 4 or 5 signings to start to compete with Leeds/St Helens

Blame Richie Mathers!

Current thoughts - Mago out or get running up them plantations, get fit or get rid.
Maybe a back up halfback, someone with a bit of experience on a short term deal.
Big tall strong running second rower, like a McMeekin or Sironen type back rower.

I'm guessing you'd have preferred Ian Lenagan to come out and say that we don't have a chance this season, and to write off the Bradford win as a monumental stroke of good fortune.

For what it's worth, I think you'll find that most fans recognise the difference between our team now and the team of 15 years ago. I think you'll also find that most fans - except apparently you - recognise the many reasons for our once-in-a-lifetime dominance of the late 80s early 90s, and equally recognise that it would be extraordinarily difficult to recreat that situation in the age of the credit crunch and the salary cap.

Still, don't let reality stop you starting yet another pointless thread.

So do i :D

We can hold our heads up high around town. Not for us the ignomony of having once supported United, Liverpool or Everton and then shamelessly casting our previous loyalties aside for a 2 bit fly-be-night outfit with no history or standing in the town. Not for us having to swear blind that we never supported another club, not for us having to swear blind that we watched our club pre-JJB.

We are Wigan Rugby League. Established 1872. The town's true club. Ancient and Loyal.

Me three !

What i have noticed about a certian MR FRISK is that whenever he starts a thread and people reply he never ever replies again. Do you think after he has pressed the submit button he realises what a stupid thing he has posted and goes into hiding bit like Salman Rushdie ?

£100 donated to Mike Gregory Fund thanks to Saints winning F#CK ALL !!! thanks JLM23 for paying up.

I just think that level of superiority only comes along very rarely. Billy Boston and co were playing when I was a young lad, but I don't remember a great deal about that time other than the cup finals. I was fortunate enough to live through the real glory days - 86-95 in my estimation - as an adult, and still have vivid and glorious memories. Anyone who thinks Leeds and Saints are great sides, can't possibly remember the Wigan of that era.

I just don't think it would be possible for the British game to throw up another team of that calibre, so long as cash is tight and the salary cap prevents it being spent even when it isn't tight. And no, before anyone starts, I'm not going to get into another SC debate. I've made my views clear on that in other posts, and don't think that one super-team blitzing everyone else all season is in any way good for the game.
