A player with genuine pace which is very very rare these days! I'd take him in a 2nd on a performance related contract which includes his attitude off as well as his performances on it.
We currently have players like Phelps in the squad who don’t have Ashton’s attacking edge and are only marginally better than him defence. Ashton would not only add an attacking edge to the squad but if he can sort his attitude out he’d be an asset.

... The solid but unspectacular Phil Bailey
But Phil Bailey was also used at second row and was never particuarly fast at any point in his career . Ryan McGoldrick was always a more dynamic player than Bailey.

Ashton cant defend to save his life. If he cant cut it at union then he does not stand a chance in Super League. He can attack but a FB should be able to defend as well.
Getting Ashton in for Mathers is no change at all. Richards should stay at Full Back. Hes better than both.

IF we signed McGoldrick, he should be at 1.
Creative, links in well as an extra half, hits the gaps well, returns the ball with interest and is a good last line of defence.
Several kicks last night by Leeds showed that McClennan had identified Pat's positioning as a week link and he was caught out on a few occasions. He is a winger filling in at fullback.
