even if it takes 6 years or 9 years or even 12 years to get to SL, spending €12m on a stadium, then spending even more again to move to a bigger stadium after only a few years seems a waste of money

surely there is another stadium, already there they could use for a few years whilst getting their finances and off the field things like coaching and youth development in order, before then looking to SL and having the backing to make a run at it and have the ability to build the new stadium when they get in, like celtic have done,im just cant see the logic of such a massive outlay on something you are expecting to be too big for in a few years anyway

Is it called Brewery Field

SOMEBODY SAID that it couldn’t be done
But he with a chuckle replied
That “maybe it couldn’t,” but he would be one
Who wouldn’t say so till he’d tried.
So he buckled right in with the trace of a grin
On his face. If he worried he hid it.
He started to sing as he tackled the thing
That couldn’t be done, and he did it!

Well you said it's not big enough for SL, and 12000 is the recommended SL capacity. But look back on what you said and tell me it's not ludicrous to expect them to build a bigger stadium (when it's not even being built primarily for them so to have it bigger it would have to be made by them)

You seem to be hung up on the capacity of the ground. They are a Championship club and will be one until at least 2015 years (they won't get in during 2012 that's for sure). Why would they need a bigger capacity than that? What would you class as ambitious yet feasible?

i would be fine with it if they had a plan for 2015 and have a plan from getting where they are now to where they would need to be in 2015,

as i said above, if they have a plan to be tenants for 6 years in Limerick FCs ground, building towards SL, and have a plan for getting a new bigger stadium for when they get there, then that is fine, in fact is is great, im happy with and about that

if they dont and dont see themselves as an SL side then that is fine also, if they want to be a NL1/NL2 club that is also fine, but they shouldnt be the focus for the RFL/RLI right now, which should be to capitalise on the success of the world cup and provide a player pathway for the elite to make a good living

it doesnt bode well if a club is planning on getting into NL1/NL2 but doesnt have a plan for then moving on, or even worse it plans to get to SL but hasnt planned how or what its going to do when it gets there, i also worry because Limerick isnt a particulalry big place, and it is rare that a stadium gets built anywhere these days, its much much rarer that two are built in 5-10 years

I have watched this thread develop with increasing humour

So what we basically have is the Irish coach who is from yorkshire saying that it would be good one day to get a semi pro team in Ireland and an Irish football team that is looking to get a new stadium built using a possible RL team most likely to gain extra funding for said football stadium

Brilliant

it isnt big enough for SL, whats your point?

they will have to build one in the near future if they expect to be an SL club in the near future, if they dont, fine, it shouldnt preclude them from entering NL1/NL2, but that shouldnt be the focus for the rfl/rli right now

yes it would be ludicrous for them to build a 15k stadium for NL2, about as ridiculous as aiming for SL but not having a plan to expand or move from a stadium which has still yet to be built, and could be built with a capacity of only 5k

Basically you've said that it doesn't sound ambitious without having an inckling of a clue what their plan is it seems. They could, as you have later suggested, have a plan to relocate should they get in the league. They may do a Catalans and relocate for a year whilst they expand the ground.

What I'm getting at is the size of the ground whilst they are playing in the Championships is no bearing on a club's future ambition.

A SL club in Ireland has to come from the Championship (or similar competition), as it is in the RFL's licensing criteria. It makes sense for a club in the Championship to play in a stadium within their means and expand when necessary rather than be in a ground that will not be used and cost too much.

Also, it is better to have a Championship club than no professional club at all. A Championship club still offers players a pathway to the elite. They can come through an academy system at this club and either play semi-pro rugby or be signed to a SL club as a trained player. It's better than no system at all.

Not as ludicrous as that at all. The first scenario would see a Championship club spend millions and most likely go bust. The second scenario gives you a Championship club with a good chance of survival, and one that can move on to SL eventually (but not instantly).
