Wellens isn't as good as either Radlinski, Hampson or Fairbairn, who are the most recent in our list of great full-backs.
He's got nothing like Radlinski's agility or attacking prowess. He's pretty safe under the high ball, but, compared to Hampo, who was the fielder par excellence, he again lacks agility. He's closest to Fairbairn, in that both of them were at the best as one-on-one defenders. But he lacks Fairbairn's tigerish spirit, and again is nowhere near as quick on the counter-attack.
To be honest, I wouldn't put Wellens up there in the top 10 full-backs. I've seen several others - and British ones too, not just Aussies or Kiwis - who were better.
