Having spent plenty of time in both cities Sydney is far nicer but Melbourne has a lot more happening. To say nothing happens in Melbourne except AFL is ignorance personified.
Face it Sydney people are lazy when it comes to RL. Other cities show it up on sporting attendance every time.

mate 3 days in melbourne and its like a country town.
no traffic, the centre of the city is hardly busy.
nice cafes and shopping but there isnt much to do down there.

There you go a typical Australian view - culture - wow can't do with that - pity there isn't a RL side that can compete on attendances with the AFL in Melbourne.
Sydney is to culture what an amobea is - and that is the intellectual level of most of it inhabitants.

sad thing is AFL originated from RU too. when an article was published stating this fact, they more or less attacked the author.
RL is the biggest Australian sport when you include TV ratings together with crowds.
sure our crowds could be bigger but then again we have a team in New Zealand as part of our competition, Origin and test matches.
Is rules played in any other country? no its an Australian sport.
Even if it was it doesn't alter the fact the biggest spectator sport in Australia is rules by quite a margin.
It may have come from union - unlikely given its make up
In my limited experience I enjoyed Melbourne far more than Sydney - and I lived in Sydney nine months - for Melbourne was far more cultured more interesting and a greater diversity of population. Your view is typical of the attitude of most Sydney bods - but then you would not expect them to get culture

I love it when some pom starts telling an Australian which at the better cities (because I was there for a little while) and how one sport in Australia was formed.
