Would you want to merge with Cronulla?
I think this year was writing on the wall for them. Despite finishing top, getting a stadium upgrade and having a decent squad and coach the fans still didn't show up. The financial crisis is going to have a massive impact on their land development plans and they are well known to be well in the financial mire.
Shame as the location of their stadium is nice and the area should in theory be big enough to attract 20,000 crowds but if the shire people don't care then nobody else will. Adelaide Sharks to join WA Reds in a new look NRL in 2013!
WEST COAST PIRATES NRL expansion? Sometime soon, maybe......

No other competition form any other AFL teams and yet less than 1% of the population go to the Swans' games. If you added up the crowd figures for the Sydney league teams in the NRL, according to your figures your looking at around 100,000 paying customers every week. 100,000 compared to 32,000, and you think the NRL should be worried about AFL?
As I said earlier compare the figures for the AFL teams in Melbourne with the NRL teams in Sydney.
Then you have a fair comparison - or compare Melbourne Storm with Sydney Swans ie one team in a city dominated by the other sport

Comparing Melboure AFL crowds with Sydney crowds is stupid.
Have you ever been to Melbourne? The people there are so wrapped up in their own insular B.S. that they dont know whats happening outside of their state!
There is nothing else to do in Melbourne than to go to the football, and for the mexicans, that means afl.
As for the Storm, they have the worst ground in Australian sport. It has a running track around it, an electricity tower situated in the stadium, it has few seats.....its horrible!

Having been to Melbourne I would disagree - it is a far more cosmopolitan city than Sydney - less full of "stick your chest out XXXX addicts" It begs the question if there is nothing else to do why is the rugby team not better supported? Let's face it where are the biggest cricket crowds in world?
I would suspect the people of Melbourne have a more diverse of interests unlike their counterparts in Sydney who see sport, drinking and posing as there hobbies.
Now it begs the question about Penrith - because there really isn't anything else to there

sydney people dont drink XXXX, its a queensland beer.
melbourne people are the most one eyed and ignorant when it comes to sport.
for example they believe AFL is an australian sport and people should support it because its domestic unlike RL which is from england.
sad thing is AFL originated from RU too. when an article was published stating this fact, they more or less attacked the author.
RL is the biggest Australian sport when you include TV ratings together with crowds.
sure our crowds could be bigger but then again we have a team in New Zealand as part of our competition, Origin and test matches.
