Hi everyone.

I have been following these boards for a number of years but for whatever reason I have not registered until today to make any posts. I thought I might copy you in on an email I sent to Phil Daly this morning regarding the current events in Australia. Phil replied very promptly and I wondered if any of you had any thoughts/ideas. I hope I have posted it in the correct place!

Email sent to Phil:

"Like many Leeds Rhinos fans who will be attending the WCC game at Elland Road I have been deeply saddened by the events in Australia. Our 2 countries have such a close relationship and a rivalry which is always friendly with our great game providing one such arena for the friendship.

I was wondering if the club could arrange a gesture of some form at the WCC game to show to solidarity of the people of Leeds with our friends in Australia. I know from watching the news coverage that the Australian Red Cross are accepting donations so even something as simple as a hyperlink to their website would be a nice gesture. I might add that I have no affiliation with the Australian Red Cross or any other charitable organisations. I am just a standard Rhinos fan that has been lucky enough to visit Australia more than once and have enjoyed their friendship and hospitality".

Response from Phil

"That sounds like a good idea, I am sure we could do that on our website. It is a national tragedy for all Australians, including of course the many who are connected with our club. I will pass this suggestion on the RFL to see if they would like to do something as a whole for the game, if not I will speak to people here to find a way that we can show our support for the thousands of people currently suffering in the Australia".

Our great game's most attractive attribute is its caring side so I'm sure the Club / RFL will do something.

Kev

Excellent work.

Well done for raising this with club.
Good response from the club too.
A coordinated response via the RFL on behalf of the whole of the British rugby league family would be an excellent idea.
What terrible times for those involved & their family and friends.

Some might argue its going too far, but with the number of deaths would a minutes silence be out of the question?

As said a miniutes silence and a collection for the red cross would be a great idea.

I'd agree with that. I work with a few Aussies and it has hit them hard. Any show of support is greatly appreciated by them.

Hopefully the RFL will take notice.

In 1935 The Dragon Slayers as they were known defeated Canterbury bulldogs 91-6, which is still the biggest win in the Club's History. In 1907, the St George district had a club in the Sydney rugby union competition. Interestingly, the team's area was referred to as the 'Illawarra suburbs'. A resolution to form a St George rugby league club was made at a local meeting held in early 1908, but the movement faltered and collapsed. St George, wearing the district colours of red and white, played in the NSWRL's Third Grade competition in 1910, and formed a President's Cup team in 1911. References were found at the time to district teams being called 'The Saints'.the perfect 11
