Worst full-back in Wigan's history. End of story. And as for the coach who keeps picking him.....
Mathers is a gutless, dirty, gobby sod and out of his depth at this level. Good at waving his arms and applauding the fans though
Yesterday there was a first-half chip kick that bounced mid-way between him and the onrushing Wakey player - and he completely bottled it. Not for the first time, either.
Lord knows what Gold Coast were thinking of when offering him a chance in the NRL. And Leeds got rid for a very good reason. He is bloody hopeless.

It is what Noble does now with the full back slot that counts.
Unlike you I am at the opposite end of the Noble appreciation society but he has to find out if Mathers is good enough.
Agreed. Now we have to hope that Noble was adopting that view and that the result will be Mathers nowhere near the squad for Friday.
Can people please stop having a go at the lad, to be honest on sunday he was better than a lot of other people. He didnt drop a ball(more than can be said for 50% of the team.)
He wasnt helped by a poor display by Roberts and the two tries they scored, he did everything he could have (which is more than can be said about Roberts!!!)
As for the sin binning, well he had no choice, leave him and wakey would have surely scored and sealed the game, or take him out and have a chance of winning.
He was the only player wanting to form the scrum in the dying seconds, and the look of dissapointment and anger, proved to me that he is commited to Wigan.
The guy needs confidence and if people stop ironically cheering him and complaining, then maybe he would do better.

It is a hard pill to swallow but unbelievably true.

Let's stop comparing him with the rest of the team and ignore supporters reactions & let's look at his overall game.
His attacking play in non-existant. Last season he had ONE try to his name and ONE try assist. For a fullback that is absolutely appauling. He doesn't get involved with link up play nor does he track up the middle, failing to hang off players shoulders in support as ALL fullbacks should.
His defence since arriving at the club has again been appauling. He struggles with one on one tackles and makes very poor decisions when it comes to the crunch. His red card against King and the yellow card yesterday is clear evidence. How many times last year did we see players literally walk through him with alot of ease?
His positional play is probably the worst. He is too indecisive when it comes to attacking kicks. He hasn't the confidence to attack the ball nor does he have the correct judgement of when to leave it. His handling is often very nervy and it's usual for him to juggle with the ball when trying to return or control an attacking kick.
It's nothing personal, it's just we can't afford to play him. He currently isn't good enough and is a massive weakness in the side. He might be a nice lad, enthusiastic and low in confidence...But sorry, none of that is worth risking results.
