What is the North and South rivalry like in Wales?

If its as intense as Yorkshire/Lancashire etc do you think there would be any merit in a challenge game between the best amateur players from each region taking on each other as a curtain raisser to a Crusaders match??

Would that generate some interest for new players? The amateur game in South Wales seems pretty strong, but I'm not sure what its like in the North.

Anyway just a thought because I would like to see a strong Welsh national side in the future playing to packed crowds.

Can only talk for myself, coming from the South, but it's never been a big thing for me. Most towns/cities in the South are too caught up in their own rivalries with each other to worry.

To be honest North or South Wales is Wales to me. Would be good to see any games between North and South or East and West especially in Super League ;)

Oh well - looks like my thoughts of State of origin Welsh style is a long way off then!

There is not rivalry between North and South Wales beyond a gentle mockery from time to time.
There could not be an amateur State of Origin type fixture between North and South because there IS no lower level rugby league of note in the North. The Crusaders support structure is currently based almost entirely in the South.

Maybe in a few years when both the Scorpions and the Crusaders are in the same league (around 2012) there may be an argument for both pro and amateur welsh SOO. But not yet.

I have lived in both North and South Wales and now I live in Mid Wales so I am well qualified to comment!

As grendel said there is no real rivalry, people from the South tend to take the p*ss out of those from the North for sounding like scousers and people from the North tend to take the p*ss out of those from the South for having no money.

Generally Welsh people all tend to get along well because we KNOW we are better than the rest of the UK and don't really have to prove anything by petty squabbles amongst ourselves like the English tend to do.

Not North v South exactly BUT We have had in the recent past EAST V WEST Wales in terms of the Welsh Conference players playing matches against each other in Bridgend possibly others.
East - Newport, Cardiff,Torfaen, Blackwood,Valley Cougars,
West- Bridgend, Swansea,Neath-Port Talbot, Dinefwr (West Wales) i think it was split.

As a Southerner living in 'Gogland' I got plenty of stick regarding accent , sheep etc normally reserved for English people when visiting our bigger neighbours. Many people think South Wales gets too much attention and the two areas are quite different sharing more in common with the English borders. It might be something worth pursuing in the future. Never understood why they stopped Lancashire v Yorkshire.
