Its a non story as the general principle of physics makes it impossible to track a ball in relation to the player passing it unless his hands were chipped.
Using gps all that could be tracked would be the trajectory of the ball in relation to the earth, a ball passed backwards by a player at pace would always travel fwd relative to the ground and incorrectly be deemed a fwd pass.

It actually would be possible.
If the ball and player were travelling at 6kph in one direction and at the point of passing it jumps to 7kph in the same direction then its forward momentum has increased which is a clear sign that it has left the passing player travelling forward.

Now possible and achivable are two totally diffrent things mind.

Dont like it one bit, shouldnt be needed either. is the buzzer going to go off if its lost forward when a team could take advantage and go full lengh from an interception?

Or when it's kicked? Or if the opposition pick up a loose ball and pass it backwards from their POV? Sounds batpoop loony to me.

Exactly, sounds a pointless waste of time, effort and money to me.

How about the linemen do there job and pick up things apart from a foot in touch? Because they sure dont pick up offsides!
