Based on the statistics, basically. Most of those that lambast Kingston upon Hull do so without so much as a visit. I don't think Hull is a particularly aesthetically pleasing place but, like you say, there is much worse out there.
One thing that you can't get away from is Hull has an appallingly high rate of crime, a lower life expectancy, poor educational attainment, high levels of teenage pregnancy and high levels of excessive drinkers and smokers. If you factor in our lack of industry we also how below average house prices and below average wages with a high level of unemployment and benefit dependant. All of this, of course, is based against national averages. Sadly, the statistical data suggests Hull is a place to avoid in terms of health, wealth and prosperity. On the plus side, though, and again according to the stats, there are 7 areas in the Country that score lower.
