Next month, my sister and a few of her mates from Uni are going to climb Mount Kilimanjaro to raise funds for Alzheimer’s. Read more about this in a special fund raising edition of The Damo Bit HERE - http://leeds.rlfans.com/readarticle.php?article_id=1523

I want to use this not to just raise funds, but to discuss Alzheimer’s in general – in particular (but not exclusively) in the rugby league community. I’m only aware of three players that were affected by the disease - Bernard Ganley, Jack Gibson and Arther Keegan. Then there’s Eddie Waring who suffered from dementia in the closing years of his life as well. If you know any others then feel free to post on this thread.

So whenever you can donate or help raise awareness to get donations in, then I’d be grateful.

This is the just giving page - http://www.justgiving.com/alzheimers2kilimanjaro

Thanks for reading.

Best of luck Damo. It's an experience to treasure.

Great cause, I worked with people with all forms of dementia for over ten years, I'll be happy if I ever do things that mean as much (to me) again.

Damo has, unfortunately named you as a Hull fan else where though Mr. Bobbin'!

It was all a misunderstanding :)

Thanks for your acknowledgement of the cause anyhow! :)

No problem, I'll probably come over all soft hearted and sponsor her.

My Grandma, who was more than utterly fabulous was a multi-infarct dementia sufferer, it was entirely different and utterly heart rending to have some one that I loved to the marrow of my bones suffer with this catastrophic illness as opposed to working and fighting for the people that I was responsible for. Different, yes. that's the word. The team that I worked with, I can say, hand on heart, made a real difference to the people that we cared for, and it truly was an honour.

Bit gushy that, apologies.

First of all I’m sorry to hear about your personal connection to dementia. It’s also heart warming to know that you’ve made a good difference in other people’s lives. Thanks for sharing this with us pal and you never needed to say sorry in the first place. After all I would of been offended if someone mistook me for a Hunslet fan
