Supporters of Hull Kingston Rovers were thanked by the people of Goroka, Papua New Guinea for the container full of toys, Rovers shirts etc which were sent to sick children in the Goroka children's hospital before Christmas. A spokesman appreciated this magnificent effort and stated the items were given by HKR fans in recognition and thanks to the people of Goraka for giving them their rugby league champion Stanley Gene.

A full report can be read in the PNG national newspaper dated 17th December by reporter Zachery Per, also showing photo's.

Thanks are also relayed to the fans by Stan himself, who will be attending as many Rovers matches next season as playing commitments allow.

A shed of joy and laughter was brought to sick children at the Goroka Base Hospital yesterday courtesy of supporters of Hull Kingston Rovers rugby league club in England.
The items were gathered for the children as part of recognizing and thanking the people of Goroka for giving them their rugby league champion Stanley Gene who played with their club for the last 14 years.
Mr Gene who also liaise with his supporters and his family members in Goroka to bring the toys and small size rugby league jerseys to the children.
Finance Manager with the Pacific Helicopters Mr Ben Ignas and Gene’s brothers in Goroka Dickson Gene and Dr Nick Dala presented the items on behalf of supporters of Hull Kingston Rovers.
Mr Ignas told the children and their parents at the children’s wards that these gifts were from Stanley Gene and his supporters of Hull Kingston Rovers.
The items were evenly distributed to the children yesterday, that brought much laughter and joy to the faces of the sick children.
Rachael Yama a mother of a nine year old sick girl Angela Yamba, thanked Hull Kingston Rovers supporter and Mr Gene for the gifts.
She said these are timely Christmas Presents for their sick children, that will help them to recover and go back home to be with their family for the Christmas and New Year period

Agree totally. Was this collection published wider as i'm pretty sure in future both sets of fans from the city would be more than happy to donate what we can. I'd like to see some old FC shirts walking round in PNG as well as the red and white shirts. :)

I always wonder what clubs do with shirts that they don;t sell at the end of teh year when the new shirts are released? Maybe both clubs could work together to ship them to Africa or PNG.

Ive got a drawer full of old football shirts etc that i'd be willing to chuck in. I know charities like Oxfam often do old shirt collections but just wondered if the clubs would lead anything like this, not sure i'd be optimistic of getting them to speak to each other and doing it joint though. :D

Nice thought Dave but TBF, apart from allowing the space to keep the donated items, this was an intiative from Stan himself and assisted by RSG members and not a club idea. Fans donated and thus helped fill the container, and AFAIK was done via the Unnoficial message forum.

I agree a joint effort in the future would be good and an annual shipment to PNG (or indeed other needy countries) could be arranged with the help of any volunteers.

Marcus Bai might have left a couple behind after his brief tenure at Hull.

Joking aside , any such donation scheme is well worth contributing to.
