I think leadership (not necassarily captaincy) is one criteria that is a must, the title itself says it all really, its about 'presence' on the pitch and the professionalism. I dont think just scoring tries or points is enough.

I would agree , its to do with attitude and presence as well as ability.

I think there is a formula for it, the RFL got Stephen Hawkings in a while back

Just had a look on wiki, it seems that up until 2008 the press made the call, now every Super League player has a vote, if so its got to be the best way, should imagine the big fella's will have the advantage though.

Should be awarded by influence on the field if its the players voting, much prefer that to a bunch od half cut hacks.

Players that are willing to go above and beyond.

Sure you can still have other awards that state how good a half back has controlled a game but a good halfback doesnt get tackled too often and stays out the way in defence so although their influence on games is great its players who are putting their bodies on the line in nearly every tackle, getting up with broken noses...etc and carrying on (i.e.Jon Wilkin/Andy Farrell) that deserve this award.

Remember Ben Fisher was told towards the back end of our first season in SL that he had broken fragments of bone in his knee, he carried on playing with it to see us through to the end of the year, that to me is going above and beyond.

As said there are other awards for other things but I think when your stating a person is a "Man of Steel" it needs to mean just that, they have been solid and unbreakable all season no matter what adversity has been thrown at them. Things that should come into it in my opinion is things like what happened to Burgess, his father dying could have broken him and his brothers but he still went out there and put in some terrific displays nothing says more than that, that he was a Man of Steel through that time.
