I think you're being a bit harsh on Thomas. Everyone can see it's frap. There is no debate about that.
But there could be any number of reasons for this. It could have been done in some bedroom in Bransholme or in prison as you suggest. If this was the case, the 'artist' could have been distracted by the form of payment he was getting at the time. We just don't know.
