Using gps all that could be tracked would be the trajectory of the ball in relation to the earth, a ball passed backwards by a player at pace would always travel fwd relative to the ground and incorrectly be deemed a fwd pass.
It actually would be possible.
If the ball and player were travelling at 6kph in one direction and at the point of passing it jumps to 7kph in the same direction then its forward momentum has increased which is a clear sign that it has left the passing player travelling forward.
Now possible and achivable are two totally diffrent things mind.
