This one of three complaints I have with the the recent trolling. I suppose you can draw an arbitary line and say reaching the play-offs is meaningless if you lose, but reaching a final is meaningful in itself irrespective of the results. It is a rather convenient location to put the line, though.
My other complaints:
The Hull as a massive club is in danger of descending into self-parody. In RL terms the only really big clubs are Leeds and Wigan, IMO. Hull KR have won only 3 league titles since WWII, gone down to the lower divisions in the 70s and again in the 90s and having been in financial difficulties seen dramatic increases in their crowds only relatively recently (you see what I did there?), so we aren't a big club either. Hull are bigger, but since Rovers scrambled out of NL1 just in time, only marginally.
Also with the salary cap the same for all clubs and a very open play-off structure all clubs should believe they are in with a chance of being champions, with the exception of newly promoted/elevated teams, probably.
