Hire a car, French motorways are deserted.

think you have to pay on french motorways cheaper by bus would have thought, but takes ages.

Barcelona is not very close to Toulouse. It is not like Perpignan. It is 3h43 by road according to Google map. What is true is that French motorways are fast with only rare traffic jam and a higher speed limit (80 mph).
However some highways are toll roads... in particular those between Toulouse and Barcelona.

Yes, there are plenty of toll stations. Getting a coach may be a good choice, if you can sort it out. Some way as has been said though.

the traffic being quiet is a myth, its bedlam around the spanish/french border. we were stuck for bout 1+1/2 hours and this was @ 11pm mainly due to trucks trying to get through. if u are travelling by car best sticking to the smaller roads (n i believe they are called) slower speed limit but less traffic.

Roads were dead at 6pm when when I was there a couple of months ago.

You can get a train through the pyrenees via la tour de carol (very slow) or you can change at narbonne (slow). There is a daily coach I think too but expect it to take all day.

Car is by far the best option.
