Hello all,

I am doing some research into a player Richard Boustead, who played for Hull FC for one season in the late 1950s. I am told (very possibly unreliably) that he had previously played Union for Newport, just failed to get into the Welsh team and was promptly signed on by Hull for a significant sum in 1958. There is a thought that his career was ended early with a serious injury (broken leg?).

However, I can only find a single one line reference to his name on the Hull FC site saying he played from 1958 to 1959 and nothing anywhere else. Does the name ring any bells with anyone and can anyone give me any information about his playing history (league or union)?

Thanks in anticipation.

David

Yes I remember Dick Bousted signing for Hull came with a welsh winger called Eddie Wanklyn very promising at first but I also believe he had a bad injury and faded from the scene

I remember him playing in the A team plus around 17 or so first team games in that one season however he scored a few tries too, think he signed with Tom Sutton although as a 9 year old Boulevard 'Urchin' I remember Eddie Wanklyn making us all titter a bit!!!

David, I do not remember the player other than the name,i have a very good friend who has been a FC fan for nearing 70 years and keeps a record still of all things FC.
I have spoken to him and yes like your other replies does remember him.
He was a centre and did sign from Newport,he did retire with a serious injury, does not know if in fact it was a broken leg.
He said he will check back through his history and is sure he has some info for you, maybe photos as well.
If you want to pm me your address I will pass it on to him and he will send you all info and photos of him.
Just out of interest he remembers that Boustead had a sight problem as well.

Hull will give us a tough game but the key is to silence their fans in the Threepenny Stand. We have to do this because if we do'nt they will get behind their side and lift them in a way you've never seen, heard or witnessed before.

He made his debut on 11th October 1958 at home to York. He played a total of fourteen games for Hull FC, scoring six tries. His tries included two against Rovers in the Challenge Cup quarter final in 1959 which was played at The Boulevard in front of 24,000!

Thanks to everyone who has contributed their memories. I have managed to get a copy of the Hull v York programme which has his debut appearance and a photo! It says he came from Cross Keys, but he is not mentioned in the Cross Keys player history at all. Wonder if he was expunged from the records for taking the league money?

Also got a Fev v Hull Semi Final programme which he didn't play in, and it doesn't mention his quarter final performance at all, or include him in the team photo. Indeed it doesn't mention anything of the Hull v KR quarter final at all other than the score. Different times!

I have PMd Plateface so anything else that comes will be a great bonus.

But thanks again to you all for everything so far.

Thanks, Jake for the humorous insight. I think a few of us might have been ahead of you there.

More importantly thanks to everyone who has contributed their snippets of information, it all helped.

However, particular thanks to Jim Shaw, who has supplied a mass of stuff from his records and posted it to me. Truly a great fan and a credit to Hull FC. Hull and Proud is a true testament to Jim’s passion. We should all be very thankful for his dedication.
