If Knocker wins this it'll be tragic
Whilst I may agree with your sentiment, I am afraid (for you) I can only vote for Knocker. For me he is the greatest that I have seen in black and white irregular hoops. I started watching in 76 which sadly is now a long time ago. It does not allow me to have seen Mr Whiteley. I have naturally read about Mr Whiteley, but given he played in an era when there was no real recording of matches to the level we had in the 1980s let alone today I have not seen him play. I therefore can not vote on the opinions of others.
I absolutely hero worshiped Knocker. He was a star amongst many stars in the 1980 but for me he shone brighter than all the rest. Yes I know we possibly had better players. Sterling, Topliss, Leuluai, Kemble, O'Hara amongst many were absolute quality. But Knocker was who I wanted to be.
Of the others Jason Smith was the last of the great loose men. Proper skillful ball handling No 13 who could control a game. Sadly in todays sterile game loose men are just third props or in Lee Radford's case the 9th prop (only full back, two halves and hookers not playing the prop role for Hull FC today).
So yes Mr Whiteley is a legend of the club and always will be, with a history that pre dates many of us and his loyalty will always be to the club, but based on what I have seen on the pitch Knocker is the main man.
