It can be a strength, if they're already settled in the UK, reduces the risk of the player being homesick when they arrive like McKinnon or getting up to speed with super League if they've already played a few games.
I think it's always hard for a player to move clubs half way through the season, even more so as a young half back moving from Oz. I wouldn't be completely sold on Schneider but feel like you would start to see improvement off the back of a full pre-season/more time to settle.

Me neither, I’d be more inclined to look at bringing our Jez back, always thought he’d make a good half, and has proved his utility value, fit as a lop, and a West Hull boy.
