Thought he'd had his marching orders by the time Crocker signed? And he still seemed keen after being initially knocked back, so it must have been something other than Sharp.
I agree coaches are a big part of attracting players, but big wads of cash also works. Unfortunately, rather than having a big reputation coach to attract multiple overseas class at decent amounts, our tactic appears to be more along the lines of scrimping wherever we can and then using a big chunk of these savings to provide a couple of marquee signings with offers too good to miss.
