As for the actual appointment I posted my views last night and I still feel the same. He is young and inexperienced and is learning all the time. He's a good guy and the players are on his side. I will wait until the end of the season before passing a proper judgement. If we have another poor season then I agree it have been a bad decision. But if we come top 6, win a playoff or 2 and do okay in the cup then you can't really argue with the decision to keep him again.
I think this shows that he was England's first choice too. I can't see why else the club would have moved so early. Also, now the coach is in place I imagine we will start to see some recruitment for next year in the next couple of months.
Good summing up. As I've said I think the decision was a month too early but maybe for the reason you suggest.

Sorry if this has been raised before but I haven't time to read 19 pages of posts but what I can't work out is why this decision has been made now. It makes no sense in either business or rugby terms.
Agar has a contract until the end of the season and its way too early to give him an extension now (just as it would have been way too early to sack him now).
He has publicly said he didn't want the England job.
I can't see that any other SL club would be after him.
Its not yet time to start recruiting new players for next season.
Has it been made to quell rumours about his future thus bringing some stability or to make clear to dissenters within the club that he is here to stay whether they like it or not?
Why was it not announced on Airlie Night last night when the decision had clearly been made by then? Presumably because JR knew how it would go down with a not insignificant section of the fans.
Will it galvanise the team for Friday and the other important matches this month? Who knows.
Maybe the job security will give Agar renewed confidence and performances will improve and we'll have a good season. Or will we end up sacking him at or before the end of the season and paying him compensation?
Sorry I've got no answers only questions.

Recruiting players starts very early nowadays before they are snapped up by other clubs and with Quota coming down the need to get feelers out for players OOC in 2010 is paramount.
Strange that they have saved the announcement for April the 1st though, surely the irony is not lost on the club.

The timing is strange, but they probably wanted to announce it to give the players a boost prior to a crucial stage of the season.

Reminds me of Warrington and Cullen. Seem to remember the Wire fans wanting rid yet the board gave Cullen an extention much to everyones amazement. As i remember within six months theyed sacked him anyway

Fair point about the finances, although personally given the choice I'd swap one of our big name signings to pay for a proven top class coach.
