If memory serves, Pete, that try was scored at the Airlie Street end were I used to station myself to the Threepennies side. Everybody went mental, we celebrated in Charleston Club, happy days.

I remember it well and have the game on vhs somewhere (micron/macronn I think). It was back when the rear half of threepenny stand was closed off and I was stood near half way. Although the stand was only half full, everyone went mental. Porky peace's finest moment

Actually I correct myself and what I wrote in the book (above) when I said no TV recordings no evidence because thanks to my good pal on here, who sent me the video of the try, last night I have relived it about twenty times this morning how we played in that mud and had commentators who didn't name any players because they were too muddy to recognise as the play progressed I don't know; great moment though and great times eh?

You can find it on that well known site on Hull V Wigan 1988. THAT try!

The boulevard pitch looking just as I remember it

I feel sorry for those too young to have experienced the boulevard

Hull where playing Wigan in the Challenge Cup at Boulevard , I kept an imaginary commentary up to my mates, in real time, saying FC have scored 3 times without reply, they got fed up of it so I stopped. Anyway I borrowed our Yank gaffers Satellite phone to ring my wife to check the score, she said they’d lost 20-22 but she’d taped it. When I was back on leave I watched it and to my amazement FC were actually 16-0 up at one time but the Wigan onslaught began but FC got a late try and think they were 20-18 up but Danny Divet knocked on from the kick off and Wigan pinched it. Was that the start of Wigan’s win everything era?

I don't think I've ever been so gutted after a game including some finals. That game just seemed to hurt the most for some reason. It was an atmosphere from a decade earlier with a big crowd inside hoping for a cup shock. But to lose it from the Jaws of victory really hurt. I think Eastwood missed a kick near the end in that game.

What a finish to a game. I tried to get a copy from Micron who did all wigans games but they reckoned they had not done a copy. Strangely i was sat next to their camera in the VP's box so that was bollox .
Some of the names mentioned as well brought some great memories back. Especially Terry Reagan, no one even the Aussies could understand him when he spoke

They definitely did as I have one somewhere. Back in the days when you had to ring up and order over the phone

I've still got a couple of VHS tapes from that era, one called "Brian Smith and the Hull FC Revival" and the other is a compilation from the 1988-89 season. They are probably unplayable now. I got them from Humberside Video Productions who I think were on Witham.
