You're coming to the end of your contract and you'd like a new one. And you'd like the terms to be good, of course. The deal is close, but you'd like a few quid more. You know the fans are keen that you sign and also that they are (or at least were), less than enamoured with the club's recent management. By going to the press, or even just waiting for them to come to you, you can create pressure on the club to get the deal done, as any delay will then worry the fans, and as you've expressed your eagerness to stay you're clearly not to blame. In fairness, it's a difficult question to handle and I'm probably projecting my own sceptical outlook a bit. But given his manager's (mis)handling of his departure from us, and that the timescale has with hindsight proven 'optimistic', that'd be my guess.
