Hard as it is to say, the biggest difference between then and now is Paul Cooke.

Bingo! The missing link. Not necessarily cookie himself, but a player of his ilk

Strictly speaking, he has been replaced. Twice. With better players.
Trouble was, neither Head nor Dykes played enough matches due to injury.
Hold on to me baby, his bony hands will do you no harm It said in the cards, we lost our souls to the Nameless One

Moot point maybe, but in those 3 years Sintellins didn't win a title.
Maybe you frightened them into submission!
You've stolen my washing From out my back garden You've tarmacked my driveway Even though I said no You've nicked my lead flashing And weighed it in at the scrappy Oh St Helen's tatters Come rob me again

cooke wasn't the difference in those games, pace in the backline and a desire to move the ball quickly and effectively were. The loss of cooke has affected us but TBH we weren't playing that well with him and horne in the halfs. cooke has plenty of ability but his main threat was the miss out pass on the left hand side. There was a lot of criticism of us at the time tht we were a one dimensional side and that was our main (only) attacking threat. What we really need is an organising scrum half with a top quality kicking game.
