A special celebration is being put on in Hull city centre to mark Hull KR reaching the Challenge Cup final.

The Robins will be taking part in their first Challenge Cup final for 29 years this Saturday when they run out to play Yorkshire rivals Leeds Rhinos at Wembley.

To mark their success, Hull City Council will be putting on a celebratory event- win or lose- on Bank Holiday Monday.

The event, in Queen Victoria Square, Hull city centre, will start from 1pm, with KR's pitch-side announcer Neil Rudd announcing the team onto the stage alongside a range of music and entertainment.

Councillor Stephen Brady, leader of Hull City Council and a big KR fan, said: "I would like to wish Hull KR the very best of luck for Saturday's final at Wembley. This is another fantastic way of putting our amazing city in the international spotlight.

"No matter the result I am sure they will give their fans a game to remember and make everyone proud.

"I would encourage all of Hull to support them even if this means putting your city rivalry aside for one day! Win or lose, I look forward to welcoming the team back to Hull for a big city celebration."

The event will also feature a big screen showing highlights of the team's history and journey in reaching the final, and a host of interviews with the full first-team squad, directors and coaches.

It will finish at 3pm with the new Hull KR charity song 'A Little Respect feat. Erasure'.

If the team win the final, an open-top bus with the team and the trophy will leave the KC Lightstream Stadium at 12.45pm on Monday and will travel through the east of the city, making its way to Hull City Hall.

Hull Kingston Rovers CEO Mike Smith said: "I would like to thank everybody at Hull City Council for their support in recent weeks and for their hard work in planning this reception.

"It has been a fantastic effort from Chris Chester and his squad to reach the Ladbrokes Challenge Cup Final and I'm sure we will head down to London and represent this city with pride.

"To get this far has been a great achievement but we want to go one better and bring the trophy home. However, regardless of the result, I'm sure the Hull Kingston Rovers supporters will get behind the team as they always do and we're looking forward to showing our appreciation in Queen Victoria Square on Bank Holiday Monday."

Parking is available in Hull city centre, normal parking charges will apply.

Paragon Street between Chariot Street and Carr Lane will be closed from 5am until 8pm on Monday 31 August.

Let's not get paranoid.

There was an event planned had we won in 2013. Maybe the club didn't want anything held otherwise.

See bottom of story:

if they win then fair enough but to celebrate losing?

imagine if it happened to us in 2013 - was there anything remotely worth celebrating about our performance that day? think the players would be a bit embarrassed as well tbh

The referee's indecision is final

Shut up you moaning gits - I was there in 2005 for the exact same thing! Let em have their day - I actually want them to win - They deserve some success, hell theyve had to wait long enough for it but the fans deserve it - Theyre Hull folk just like us!

Why would anyone begrudge a civic reception when they win the cup? It's the unlikely scenario of losing and having a council-funded/organised event that's odd. Did we have a civic event in 2008 or 2013, or did City have one after losing in the FA Cup? I can't recall one but happy to be proven wrong. Either way I believe their name is on the cup (said this after they beat Wigan) so it's well deserved.
