https://www.theherald.com.au/story/2050 ... y-knights/ALBERT Kelly’s brief tenure with the Newcastle Knights officially ended today after the controversial five-eighth was sacked by the NRL club.
The former Australian Schoolboy pleading guilty on Tuesday to smashing a light at Newcastle nightspot Fannys in April and the incident is believed to have led to his sacking.
Earlier this season Kelly was discarded by Cronulla for a string of alcohol-related incidents.
Knights CEO Matt Gidley confirmed Kelly’s contract termination in a question and answer forum with supporters.
‘‘There is no doubt Albert is a talented young player who obviously had some issues off the field while living in Sydney,’’ Gidley said.
‘‘We offered Albert an opportunity to move to Newcastle to focus on his rugby league career under the guidance of Wayne Bennett.
‘‘Unfortunately, due to further disciplinary reasons, Albert has recently had his NSW Cup contract suspended, then terminated.
‘‘We wish Albert the best of luck in fulfilling his rugby league potential in the near future and thank him for his efforts whilst at our Club.’’
Kelly was sacked by the Knights two weeks ago before it is understood coach Wayne Bennett over-ruled the decision and he has since been suspended.
The Knights signed the 21-year-old to a second-tier contract to play in their reserve side in the NSW Cup after Kelly arrived in town to play in the Newcastle Rugby League with Central Newcastle.
Central coach Paul Davis is Kelly’s uncle.
Last Sunday Kelly tore in hamstring playing for the Butcher Boys against Western Suburbs and is expected to be sidelined for at least the next month.
