if thats the case, athletes at the peak of physical fitness have been unfortunate enough to suffer a fatal heart attack of sorts due to their heart simply not being able to meet the demands of the rest of the body - scarey stuff if you ask me !

Am I to assume that because this thread has been unlocked that this has been confirmed as true?

If so then thats very worrying, there could be an underlying problem that is best discovered this way than during a game.

I remember a young prop in Australia called Adam Ritson suffering a high tackle which forced him to have a brain scan. The results of the scan showed a life threatening tumor which would have gone undiscovered had he not been hit high in a game.

Strange things happen for a reason sometimes!

What I read was that as a precaution they decided to give him an adrenalin injection prior to the operation to increase his heart rate.

His heart rate didn't increase so they used an epidural injection rather than a general anaesthetic.

He had heart checks between operations and they found no problems.

The only thing they could put the lack of response to the adrenalin was his superb fitness levels :)

He wasn't happy being awake during the op but listened to an ipod to distract him.

so I take it the op on the knee was undertaken and now he can rest, and gradually come back to the team when healed :)
