This modified system means that if you finish first or second you really need to win that first match. The team in fifth can sit back and watch 1 and 2 knock the hell out of each other and then come in fresh against a tired team in week 2.
You could finish fifth and gain promotion by only winning two games. The looser of the first game has to play three. Seems odd!
I'll mention Leeds again, they managed their squad, didn't seem to mind loosing several games during the season (although it peed off their fans to pay good money for dire rugby), finished fifth, but hit the finals fresh and ready for action.
You would have to be capable of playing well away from home to do it from fifth though.
