Barry Eaton, Keighley Cougars’ Head Coach, emerged from their eighth league game in this season’s Co-operative Championship One – a 30-26 victory at Blackpool - and said: “This is a tough, competitive division.
“Although we’re now lying in third place it’s pretty tight up there,” he said. “We know that the smallest slip will be punished by the other clubs who are equally ambitious as we are at the Cougars”.
Winning at Woodlands Memorial Ground last Sunday provided Keighley with their first away win of the campaign and their fifth victory of the league campaign.
”No disrespect is intended but only London Skolars are currently struggling in this division and even they have shown what they can do by winning at Workington Town,” added Eaton.
“I said at the start of the season that I expected the competition to be tough and I’ve been proved correct.
“There are some outstanding players operating in Championship One and that makes it really interesting for everybody connected to the game.
“The standard of Rugby League being played in Championship One have improved considerably in the last couple of years and everybody in this league is capable of beating everybody else.
“Last Sunday’s game at Blackpool was typical of the competitive situation that now exists in Championship One.
“Blackpool are a tough side to beat and we had to produce our best form to take the points. We’ve played them four times so far this year and the score is now two matches each!”
Added Eaton: “We face another serious challenge when WorkingtonTown visit Cougar Park this Sunday.
“They will be hurting after becoming the first team to be beaten by London Skolars and taking a beating at home from Dewsbury Rams, so they’ll be coming to kick start their season against us this weekend.
“In spite of losing some players because of their financial position they still have some good players on their books and I believe they’ve under performed so far this season.
“I don’t want my players to drop their guard against Town and we shall be preparing well throughout this week”.
