Has anyone seen this crazy sport from America yet?

It's one of the fastest growing all girl contact sports in the UK and if you like Roller skating, fishnets and girls knocking lumps out of each other on rollerskates i think you'll love it.

I've been involved with coaching a team in Manchester formed 8 months ago and gotta say i'm absolutley hooked, i only heard of it after the missus mentioned joining a team based in Leeds as Manchester didn't have a team but her and a friend decided to form the Rainy city roller girls, since then we have expaneded to the point where we can now field 3 teams of 12 which is more than we ever thought we'd acheive and now we have our first competetive bout coming up on the 20th of June in Bury.

Isn't it just a rip off of that event they had on Ice Warriors? No doubt that was ripped off something too though.

Edit: Just read up on it, slightly different 8)

They used to show this on one of the sky channels. From the USA around about 15 years ago - a bit like WWE on rollerboots, with storylines, taking people out with benches etc.

aye it was on living or something like that, my parents had BSB rather than sky back in the early 90s(mum preferred the squarial rather than skys big white dish) got up one morning and they had merged and there was the roller derby, it was quite fun to watch.

I think that was a last ditch attempt by the old RD regime before it went bust. It only resurfaced in around 2003ish when Texas started to play the game again since then it's become a pretty big game in the states.

The game basically consists of two teams of 5 on the track at any point 8 blockers (4 perside) that skate around in a pack and two jammers (point scorers). The aim is too get your jammer through the pack by and for each person she passes she scores a point (although not on the first pass) you can only use your shoulder or hip to block people out of the way so you see some great collisions at speed with some pretty bad injurys (the girls can't get insurance ether) on saturday at a london game one girl shattered her jaw. My girlfriend compairs it to Rugby on wheels but you score with your body not your balls

There are loads of videos on youtube if you can watch videos of the Gotham or Texas as they're the best in the buisness and stay away from the 70's banked track RD thats the WWF type stuff

If you thought the RFL were bad the WFTDA (governing body) have brought in a stack of rule changes out of the blue that come into effect imediately, the week before the Manchester bout, three weeks before i'm one of the refs for England vs Scotland at NASS fest and 4 weeks before the european championships at Earls court. So i now have to learn the new rules and take the new WFTDA referees exam on sunday (all players too have to take this exam of they can't skate). So instead of a bbq tommorrow i'll be trying to learn 40 pages of rules, there american too so not only do they make them far too complex they word them silly aswell
