even though it is just a friendly still mildly humerous
2-0 to Pirates and deservedly so.
(Yes, I finally managed to get a live stream – from the club, before anyone asks if it was legal!)
But then I used to use my own regular column in a certain national daily to rail against the culture that screamed panic when England lost friendlies.
Friendlies have an important role to play – but winning is not top of the list, most of the time. And certainly not at this stage of a pre-season. In terms of Saturday's City game, we saw Michael Johnson play 45 minutes. Bojinov and Petrov also put in good spells (the latter, the full 90). A number of youngsters were blooded. Weiss looked generally good – although a little physically light at present.
So for me, there were a lot of interesting and positive things to come out of that match. And questions too. I simply wanted to roll my eyes at the City fans, online, who were calling for Sparky's head. It shows a complete lack of understanding of the role/s of friendlies. And it irritates me every bit as much as when I was reporting week in, week out, on domestic and international football. There are times I've thought that we should actually ban all coverage of friendly games – because so many people just don't seem to 'get it'.
