Personally I think it is a reasonable option, it effectively rewards players who come to our league and stay for a long period - we do need to have players like that rather than short term over for a few months/year and running off as soon as a sniff of a NRL contact appears or their previous misdemeanors are "forgotten". It might encourage clubs to look for better value in overseas signings as well. Our league has always been at it's strongest with a mix of top overseas players and clubs bringing through young players- which sadly only a limited number of clubs seem to really be good at - this is an an area I think needs more attention.

How does it reward the players?

The way I read the article is that it rewards the club who has such players because they are exempt.

For me the focus is wrong. The RFLshould be concentrating on how it can get more juniors to play the game and retain the better players in SL by paying them what they are worth. Personally, I would like to see the £50k allowance for club trained players extended.

Agreed.

Another barrier to federation trained players.

Don’t like this at all personally.

If anything we should be looking over an extended period of time to reduce the reliance on overseas players. I appreciate this isn’t going to happen over night and would need to be over a period of 10/20 years but I’d love to see us return to 5 then 3.

Couldn't agree more. It's something I have been proposing for years. If this goes through we may see as many as 8-10 oversees players in some teams, which is ridiculous IMO.
Seven is already too many.
