Didn't FIFA originally do this for one of their games? Claiming you would be the 12th man? I'm pretty sure we can't really claim to have came up with the notion, coaches and players often say the home crowd is like an extra man. It's a bit cheesy but if it helps sell merchandise and get bums on seats then so be it.
