Years ago a penalty try resulted in a try and a further penalty in front of the posts. Not sure if like today they got the extra penalty if only they converted the kick though - maybe older folk can recall some specific examples.

I recall Wigan getting a penalty try in a dead rubber nothing to play for final round match against Leeds in 2002 in which Craig Smith was stripped of the ball whilst trying to score but we didn't get an extra shot. We just got the conversion brought in front of the sticks.

Same happened in last years world cup final as well.


Never seen an extra penalty given though.
