I was just about to mention that Alex:

Quote:The Boy's Own Stuff final. Wigan full back Kris Radlinski was out shopping when he was bitten by an insect. In a short time, he was in hospital on a drip after a bout of blood poisoning, four days before the 2002 Challenge Cup final against arch rivals St Helens at Murrayfield. He barely ate or drank, let alone trained, but received a call from Wigan chairman Maurice Lindsay saying he'd bet £5 on him winning the Lance Todd Trophy. He had to keep his feet elevated on the journey to Edinburgh and memorably joined Wigan's walkabout at the stadium in a pair of slippers. Saints coach Ian Millward treated talk of Radlinski playing as a Wigan wind-up. On the morning of the match, Dr Ansar Zaman, the Wigan club doctor, cut into Radlinski's infected big toe and administered enough painkilling injections to knock out a baby elephant. A half-size bigger boot was flown from Manchester to Edinburgh and Radlinski entered cup folklore as his string of extraordinary try-saving tackles won the cup for Wigan in a 32-16 victory and Lindsay his bet.

21-12 anybody ???

32-16 was the score of the 2004 final, where we lost to St Helens.

Fantastic journalism. No, really.

Aren't these guys supposed to be 'experts'?

Radlinski was immense that day I have to say and deserved his man of the match award without question.

The amount of things these so called 'experts get wrong' is unbeliveable and its allways about Rugby League. You would never see these mistakes happen if it was Union, Football and Cricket.

I thought journos are supposed to do research eh. Awful mistake to go to press with.

I remember the whole build up to that game, will he, wont he play. Specially made boots from Adidas one slightly bigger than the other. Doc Zaman draining his foot before KO. Walking around pitch pre match in his slippers!!

Many thanks to the Wigan fans who brought this to my attention on the blog. The only excuse I can offer is that the copy was posted early inadvertently before final checks. A procedural cock up, i.e. some Clever Dick thought he knew better than me about the 2002 score. As you can see now the story has been corrected. Radlinski and the 2002 final remains one of my greatest cup memories.
Enjoy the Magic Weekend.
