Reading the Adam Mcdougal / Wendell Sailor story last week got me thinking about the lack of real characters in modern day rugby league, it was certanly refreshing to see two players going public about their feelings for one another and it made entertaining reading. All too often it seems that when players are interviewed they give the same predictable answers and seem reluctant to express their true feelings about opposition players or teams. Thinking back do you have any memories about players that have played for Wigan and have not been afraid to express their views about oppositions players or teams? |

Shaun Wane used his after match MOTM award speech following the defeat of Manly to thank the Manly players for a good warm up for the Lancashire Cup Final |

Nikki Kiss live on BBC1 before the challenge cup final against Hull in 1985 - He was being interviewed about his antics with the crowd and when the commentator said, if there is one person more popular than you it is this fellow by your side. it was Henderson Gill and Nikki Kiss said 'Yes well he adds some colour to the team! Cringe worthy!!! |

Nicky Kiss again. He didn't get on with Alex Murphy and actually stayed away from the club. The first night after Murphy was sacked Kiss returned to training singing Murphys gone, Murphys gone, Murphys gone at the top of his voice. |

There's some great archive footage I've got on vhs somewhere of Henderson Gill, Des Drummond and Ellery Hanley all being interviewed on grandstand together on the pitch at Knowsley Road prior to a JPS semi v Leigh. It was before Ellery went all moody and silent and in particular I remember Gilly and Ellery taking the mick out of Des' smart Leigh matchday outfit and calling him a flying bluebottle. It would make classic youtube viewing if someone has a copy they can convert. |

Back in the days when a comment like that was just taken as it was meant, eh? Everyone thought it was funny, but now you'd get do-gooders wanting you to issue apologies, and then go and do some charity work in Africa just to make sure. Henderson brilliantly followed this up though with a response to Harry Gration's question about whether he was looking forward to the game: "Al tell yer when av got me 'at trick! I'm gonna be anuvver Billy Boston!" |
