What I have noticed over the last two seasons at Headlingley is that we take a lot of shockingly bad fans, at Hull there was nothing like that, and at other grounds there seems to be no major issues, so why does this happen when we play at Leeds?

There were quite a lot of drunk Wigan fans last night who seemed to be there to drink the place dry and insult every single player on the pitch, ours included :x

It is not always young chavs either as last night a female steward was given a mouthful by bloke in his late 50's just for doing her job. Last year there were a group of blokes around 50 years who were very drunk, very loud and very aggressive towards Leeds fans.

Its not limited to Wigan fans.

Thinking this one through you have at Headingley a ground that is quite difficult to get to and prone to motorway delays etc, but on the upside you have a ground that is bang in the centre of studentsville where in excess of a dozen pubs and bars (we listed them all on ss.com last year, there are lots within walking distance) are open all afternoon/evening and eager to take business from anyone with money to spend.

So your average away supporter arrives in Headingley, at least one, often several hours before k/o to find eager landlords welcoming them and their money in the knowledge that they will be out of the place by 7.30pm and not likely to be causing trouble on their patch when the ale kicks in, by that time they'll be in the ground.

We also don't help ourselves inside the ground, unlike (for instance) the JJB where once inside the "away" stand you are captive and easily controlled, at Headingley an "away" supporter has the freedom to roam around the cricket ground and buy beer in large quantities from at least three bars with quick-pour pumps, its not a problem finding beer at Headingley and no problem at all in getting served as long as you have the cash ready.

And finally, we've always had a problem at Headingley with under-age drinking, it used to be that the bar staff would serve anyone without checking but after deluging the club with emails I'd like to think that it wouldn't be possible now, I'd like to think that but I wouldn't be surprised if 15/16 year olds have no problems at all in getting served inside the ground.

So there you have it - very easy access to alcohol in the district around the ground before the game, a requirement to arrive early anyway, and a club who are delighted to keep serving you at premium prices - if all of that sounds far fetched then an alcohol ban within a five mile radius of Headingley on a matchnight would cause a collapse in the local economy so huge that questions would be asked in parliament.

i heard so, battery went on the "chief casual's" calculator :)

A purple patch inspired on his home ground by man of the match WIGAN CAPTAIN Sean O’Loughlin produced three tries in an eight-minute spell just before half-time, and the GB Lions added two more after the break to maintain Smith’s 100 per cent record as Great Britain
coach.

I was walking back to my car near some of the young lads who were being a bit leery. The police were waiting for them at a coach.

No dramas from me, they were just silly young kids who couldn't handle their beer.

Wigan fans have always been welcome and knowledgeable visitors to Headingley and I've always enjoyed standing with them during games.

These eejits haven't tarnished your reputation. Sadly we all have our element but I won't let them stop me watching RL with and amongst opposition fans.

Quote:Every player in our squad could probably earn more money with another club. But they prefer to sacrifice a few extra quid in their back pocket to share special memories. And playing at a place like Old Trafford on a night like this makes it all worthwhile.

the year when leeds united went down marked a definite change in the atmosphere at headingley.
thankfully it seems to have died away. in 20 years of going to leeds i'd never heard the kind of abuse hurled at all and sundry as i did that night.

+1 :thumb: I too must say that of all the away fans I have come into contact with the pies have usually been the most accommodating, and the most fun. We too have our dickheads, it's becoming the whole rl familys problem and needs addressing before it becomes the norm.

I stood immediately to the left of the screen, there were a few Leeds fans with us and everyone seemed to be in a good mood and we were all chatting and having a laugh with each other. I saw the can landing on the pitch but other than that I had an enjoyable night (apart from the result of course). The problem is that for every idiot there will be ten people who know who they are but wont speak up.

Don't know if this has already been mentioned but there was a group of about 10 lads and girls stood right at the aide of where the Sky camera is on the stage in the Wigan end, just behind where the pint was thrown from. During the match they started to shout Noble Out which then got a gang of around 10-15 men (and I reiterate the word men as they are regulars who I have seen on many occassions and are all 25-50) to argue and then start fighting. This went on for 10-15 minutes and the police did turn up but I don't think anyone was thrown out. These men should hang their heads in shame, and if they do read this I just want to say how pathetic and fickle they all looked.
What do I think to the RL people who continually downplay everything in RL, and influence the stupid sheep to think like them? I think they are one of the reasons that RL will always be a minor sport.
