I think he probably would have only got one game if he hadn't got himself red carded twice last year. He's becoming a regular offender so they'll come down harder on him each time.
If Roberts + Richards are both out, then maybe this was not a bad decision. Yes I know he isn't great, but who else can play full back? I wouldn't play Goulding there because he'd be more effective in the centre.
The only option I can see is Phelps at FB with Ainscough, Carmont, Goulding & Pryce in the backs.
