No it’s an article about players “bending” the rules, it’s about players trying to get away with “the dark arts” some are better at it than others. You want every ref to be the same? Bit like every player being the same, it’s impossible it’s called being human. Players will try to “cheat” to get the advantage, it’s part of the game, some refs are more skilled at spotting the cheats some not as good, again it’s because they are human, don’t know any ref who cheats though! So why not accept it! Players will cheat to get the result, the officials will try to spot those cheats, who is wrong, the cheat or the bloke who is less skilled than another at spotting the cheat.

Both. Players should not gain points through cheating. Refs get paid to do a professional job and with the help of his two stooges should notice this. Also I know you will never say a bad word against refs but they are as bad as the players, they let the rules slip to please themselves

I agree with Torbreck the biggest problem with Refs is consistency, I thought yesterdays Ref was pretty good he made one or two mistakes but he let the game flow, he was not blowing up every 2 minutes for penalties, I am sure he could have awarded a lot more penalties than what he did. The Catalans v Hull was completely different Child's was given penalties for the slightest infringement which made the game very boring with all the stop start. The other annoying thing about Refs is the number of times they send the decision on a try to be reviewed, Thaler is very good at making his own decision the same as Ganson when he was referring but Bentman and the referee of the game on Friday night will never make decision on a try as long as their backsides point downwards.

The vid ref is an interesting discussion, player makes an error grounding the ball, are they honest? Not a chance the player will always clam the try even when they know they have made an error. In that case if the ref is unsighted but in his view he thinks it’s grounded and gives it, then from the replays it shows a knock on, result the Refs get slated. So any doubt they go upstairs, result the refs get slated.
As for James Childs! Why was he constantly blowing? Coz players were infringing, it was a tight game it needed reffing that way. A game that’s a runaway score you can let flow more. All the arguments against Catalans saying Refs penalise em more, yes because there discipline is shocking. Soon as they got put on a warning they stopped infringing what does that say? The VR issue with obstruction is now getting silly, that’s one thing I think we all agree on, but look at the other side, we now have players stopping and throwing their hands up appealing for the penalty! When I played we were taught play to the whistle, Rugby league players are increasingly becoming like football players. Think the aus game has got the obstruction decisions right, could the defending player have made the tackle or effect the play, if not then it’s not obstruction, the uk view does not seem to take that into account but the ref and VR are only applying the laws of the game.

Spot on, quality of refereeing has nothing to do with players bending the rules (I am sure they try that in every game). It is about the ref being consistent in their application of the rules. The bloke on Saturday was good primarily because you didn't notice him too much yet you didn't feel too much was being missed by him either.

Totally agree with both above. Saturday he let the game flow and whilst making a couple of honest errors he helped make it an exciting game, he only blew up when there were stupid team mistakes or unforced errors which could not be ignored. Friday was so poor I switched off through boredom, if the team sneezed her blew the whistle and not make a decision on his own. The vd is there for SUPPORT of difficult decisions not every decision. Professional refs need consistency between themselves and consistency for the teams being refereed by them
