GIANTS SET OUT TO RETAIN TITLE AT CARNEGIE NINES

Huddersfield Giants will set out on Wednesday evening to secure their first piece of silverware in 2009 when they defend the Carnegie Floodlit Nines trophy the club won in last season’s inaugural competition.

With the first team squad preparing for the Challenge Cup final at Wembley on Saturday, Head of Youth Performance Damian McGrath will take the reigns for the tournament that saw Leroy Cudjoe pick up the man of the tournament award for his performances in the victorious Giants side.

Giving youth a chance will again be the mantra for McGrath’s Giants side, with a number of players that performed so well against St Helens last Friday getting a further chance to stake a regular first team claim.

McGrath spoke to giantsrl.com about the concept of the nines, which he believes will flourish:

“We are putting a fairly strong team out and most of our young players that showed up so well on Friday against St Helens will once again be representing the club, so they get another chance to stake a claim. We are going there as defending champions and that’s not something we plan to give up easily.”

“I think anything that enhances and puts a great emphasis on skill is fantastic for the game and I think it’s important that young players recognise that. I can see the concept growing and establishing its own unique place in the Rugby League calendar.”

Tickets for the Carnegie Floodlit Nines at Headingley are available to purchase from the Galpharm Stadium Ticket Office until 3.30pm today. Supporters are also informed that they will be able to pay on the turnstile at Headingley.

I for one am looking forward to this, as Blackpool have a good chance of meeting huddersfield in the quarters, considering wembley is on saturday, i'd assume you would send fringe players which would give us a chance, considering our approach to 9s, however our best player now out for season wont help, looking forward all the same, exposure against super league teams wont do any harm will it :D
